Inpatient Addition

Robert Packer Hospital selected HOLT Architects to design renovations to the 8 Northwest Medical/Surgical Unit to achieve the project's two main goals. The first of which was achieving a core layout that supports a Lean Design Concept* to improve the patient and family experience and overall staff and provider communications with patients and families. Second, they wished to upgrade patient rooms to provide patients with flexible, patient-controlled lighting, upgraded finishes, patient monitors at bed-side and hospital-grade smart TVs with interactive capabilities such as dietary menus and patient room information.

The core layout is made up of two decentralized nurse stations with duplicate core support spaces, each with two care teams supporting a group of five private and semi-private patient rooms. This supports a collaborative, team-based approach and ensures their proximity to patients and their guests.

Working closely with staff and Guthrie’s project manager, HOLT managed regular on-site project coordination to assure compliance with design requirements and approvals by the Pennsylvania Department of Health Divisions of Life Safety and Acute and Ambulatory Care.

This major renovation serves as a model area for finish upgrades and process improvement for future unit renovations.

*Based on the lean manufacturing concept of maximizing productivity while eliminating waste.
