Small Animal Community Vet practice

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine's new Community Practice Service Building provides a real-world veterinary practice for students with opportunities to interface with real clients.

Patients enter the 10,000 sf stand-alone facility into an open and bright waiting area that provides a welcoming first impression. A light-filled corridor leads to five exam rooms where specific materiality, exam furniture and fixture specifications mirror that found in facilities Cornell veterinary students will find themselves in post grad.

Surgical spaces include imaging, procedure induction/recovery, and separate animal holding areas. Two dental workstations support cleaning, X-rays, and surgical tooth extractions. Other spaces include labs, pharmacy, staff and faculty offices, conference rooms, lockers, restrooms, and several touch down/collaboration areas.

The design of the building is optimized to offer students a range of experiences and help them gain an appreciation for the realities of running a clinic as a small business. The clinic's own surgery and X-ray facilities facilitate scheduling procedures. The exam rooms display the computer monitor in different places and contain a variety of exam tables that students will likely encounter in future workplaces. The surgery rooms feature different types of lights, and the hospital has multiple types of cages.
